چکیده

This study examined the effects of a competing signal on sentence-word priming using an auditory lexical decision paradigm. Previous studies have suggested that the facilitatory component of the sentential priming effect is particularly sensitive to acoustic distortions that reduce the perceptibility of the sentence context, whereas the inhibitory component is more sensitive to increased attentional demand. Three competing signal conditions were compared: forward speech presented to a different ear, backward speech presented to a different ear, and forward speech presented to the same ear. The results demonstrate that the competing signal has different effects on priming depending upon the semantic content of the signal and its perceptual isolability from the

The effect of voice cuing on releasing Chinese speech from informational masking

In a cocktail-party environment, human listeners are able to use perceptual-level and cognitive-level cues to segregate the attended target speech from other background conversations. At the cognitive level, priming the listener with part of the target speech in quiet can markedly improve the recognition of the remaining parts when the target speech and competing speech are presented at the sam...

Recognition of spoken words: semantic effects in lexical access.

Until recently most models of word recognition have assumed that semantic auditory naming effects come into play only after the identification of the word in question. What little evidence exists for early semantic effects in word recognition lexical decision has relied primarily on priming manipulations using the lexical decision task, and has used visual stimulus presentation. The current stu...

Speech-in-speech perception and executive function involvement

This present study investigated the link between speech-in-speech perception capacities and four executive function components: response suppression, inhibitory control, switching and working memory. We constructed a cross-modal semantic priming paradigm using a written target word and a spoken prime word, implemented in one of two concurrent auditory sentences (cocktail party situation). The p...

The effects of attention on perceptual implicit memory.

Reports on the effects of dividing attention at study on subsequent perceptual priming suggest that perceptual priming is generally unaffected by attentional manipulations as long as word identity is processed. We tested this hypothesis in three experiments by using the implicit word fragment completion and word stem completion tasks. Division of attention was instantiated with the Stroop task ...

Controlling the unconscious: attentional task sets modulate subliminal semantic and visuomotor processes differentially.

Are unconscious processes susceptible to attentional influences? In two subliminal priming experiments, we investigated whether task sets differentially modulate the sensitivity of unconscious processing pathways. We developed a novel procedure for masked semantic priming of words (Experiment 1) and masked visuomotor priming of geometrical shapes (Experiment 2). Before presentation of the maske...
